Gen Syed Asim Munir is Next Army Chief of Pakistan After Bajwa

After Bajwa, Gen. Syed Asim Munir will lead Pakistan's army. What you need to know about Lt Syed Gen Asim Munir, the new Army Chief selected by the PM. General Qamar Javed Bajwa will be replaced as Pakistan's next army head by Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir, according to a decision made by the federal government on Thursday morning. The next highest-ranking officer is Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir, who succeeds outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa. He is currently the Pakistan Army's Quartermaster General.

Who is Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir?

Lt. Gen. Munir was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment after enrolling in the Mangla Officers Training School (OTS) program. Lt Gen Munir joined the military after graduating from the Mangla Officers Training School and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment. Since he oversaw troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under the departing army leader, who was then Commander X Corps, he has been close to Gen Bajwa.

Lt Gen Munir as a Military Intelligence Director:

Lt Gen Munir was then named Military Intelligence Director General in early 2017 and Inter-Services Intelligence Chief in October of that same year. His tenure as the top intelligence officer, however, ended up being the shortest in history since, at the behest of the then-prime minister Imran Khan, he was replaced by Lt Gen Faiz Hamid after only eight months.

Prior to being transferred to the General Headquarters as the quartermaster general, he was stationed as the commander of the Gujranwala Corps, a position he held for two years. For Gen. Bajwa, then the Commander X Corps, Lt. Gen. Munir oversaw troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier. He was appointed director general of military intelligence at the beginning of 2017. He was appointed director general of the ISI in October 2018.

PM Shehbaz’s pick for Army Chief:

Lt. Gen. Munir was appointed Gujranwala Corps Commander eight months later. Two years later, he was appointed Quartermaster General at the GHQ. The 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla awarded the Sword of Honor to Lt. Gen. Munir. He has also been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz. He memorized the Quran while serving as a Lt. Colonel in Saudi Arabia, earning the title of "Hafiz-e-Quran."

According to PM Shehbaz's decision, Lieutenant General Asim Munir would take over as Pakistan's army chief from General Qamar Javed Bajwa and would succeed General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. President Arif Alvi has been sent a summary in this regard for his approval.

Marriyum Aurangzeb, the minister of information, posted the statement on Twitter and said that the premier had exercised his constitutional right to make the choice. She stated that Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza had been chosen to serve as the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee's chairman (CJCSC).

The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is a forum for cooperation between the three military services. The National Command Authority and the Prime Minister both function through the CJCSC.
