French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to talks at the Elysee Palace in Paris with lengthy handshakes, despite the outrage of groups representing rights over the meeting.
Macron graciously welcomed the de facto monarch of the kingdom prior to a meal, AFP TV pictures showed that he defied the protests of people who believe the discussions are inappropriate just four years after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
The prince, also known as MBS is currently making his first visit to Europe after the shooting and also had talks in Greece earlier in the week.
MBS who was dressed in traditional Saudi attire shared the long gesture of a handshake with Macron and Macron, both joined their hands in a warm gesture of four hands.
Macron then led MBS through the steps on the red carpet and into The Elysee Palace.
There was no comment from either man however, Elysee is expected to issue a statement from Elysee following the discussions.
The body language used during the talks is bound to be closely monitored following an altercation with US MBS and President Joe Biden and MBS earlier this month was interpreted as an indication of his return to the global community.
A UN report on the murder of Khashoggi on the 2nd of October 2018, in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, found that there was cause to examine the guilt of the prince. US intelligence claimed that he approved of it, which the Saudis deny.
